The Boatswain's Pipe (pronounced "bosun's") pipe was used in the Crusades to call English cross bowmen on deck for attack. Because its shrill tune could be heard above most of the activity on board it later was used to signal various happenings such as knock-off and the boarding of officials. This signaling device was so essential to the well-being of the ship, that it became a badge of office and honor in the British and American Navy of the sailing ships.

Additional Information

Imagine sailing the high seas as commander of your own ship, calling out to your crew with your brass keyring boatswain whistle as the wind whips through your hair. As the Greeks and Romans used flutes to issue commands, so shall you with your very own boatswain brass key chain. Experience the tranquility of the vast expanse of ocean, immersed in the beauty of the ocean shimmering under sunny skies, and with one of these brass keyrings call out to hoist the sails, haul in the rope, and set sail into the sunset. Historically recreated, these brass keyrings are played by blowing into the narrow tube, or gun, while using the hole atop the bouy to alter the sound. Combine low and high notes with plain, warbled, and trilled sounds to issue a multitude or orders, and be heard above the ocean’s roar with the whistle’s crisp, clean tone. Fall in love with the timeless wonder of the open sea, discovering new horizons and new lands, and with one of these fabulous brass keyrings become a true sailor.
